About This Project

The collaboration between MDHA and the community to rejuvenate the blighted area of Jefferson Street into a park-like space is commendable. Celebrating the rich history and achievements of the Historic Jefferson Street residents by creating a space that pays homage to the musicians and performers who once graced the area is a beautiful way to honor their legacy.

Jefferson Street was a mecca for musicians and performers the likes of Aretha Franklin, Count Basie, Muddy Waters, James Brown, Etta James, Otis Redding, Ray Charles, and B.B. King. Jimi Hendrix honed his guitar playing skills at Del Morocco Club near Heritage Plaza.

The presence of Heritage Plaza near historically black schools like Tennessee State University, Fisk University, and Meharry Medical and Dental College adds another layer of significance to the area. These institutions have played a crucial role in the community, and having a space like Heritage Plaza nearby can serve as a reminder of their importance and contributions.

The landscape design by EDGE brought a thoughtful touch to the project, ensuring that the space is not only visually appealing but also functional and meaningful to the community. Heritage Plaza is a wonderful addition to the Nashville area that will be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike for years to come.
